Carry On Tips | Travel

Welcome to my Travel Tips series. I wanted to create a series of tips and ideas that'll suit anyone, any time of the year, on any budget, for any length of time away on holiday.

This post does go in hand with Packing Tips, Jet Lag and the Universal Carry On Bag posts. However this is more of things to consider for your carry on.

A carry on bag, do you even need one? Whether you've travelled as a kid, having mum pack your bag for you or to never have flown in your life at all, it may not be as straightforward as it seems.

A lot of airlines these days charge you to check a suitcase into the hold which can get expensive. Fitting all your belongings into a carry on bag and you won't have to worry about it being lost. So here's some ideas to get the most out of what you can bring on the plane.

The basics - I.D, money, copies of travel documents and an antibacterial agent. I consider these the bare minimum for any type and duration of travel. The rest is "extras".

Stay hydrated inside and out! The higher the altitude, the lower the moisture in the plane. Take an empty water bottle through the security checkpoint and fill up before boarding so you have something to sip on throughout the flight. Planes also suck out moisture from the skin.

With the recycled air, face sprays add nutrients into the skin. For long flights, masks add an extra moisture boost in either cloth, peel off or non rinse forms will be of major benefit and high hydration levels are known to help with jet lag. If your skin leans more on the drier side, lip balm will be a lifesaver.

Pack entertainment. Music, books, magazines, iPad/tablet or laptop. Most of the airlines have a wide selection of content including very current movies and tv shows but this might not be of any interest to you.

Airplanes are notorious of being cold. Make sure your clothing will be warm enough for you or bring a lightweight jacket or scarf. You can never be sure if the airline will have free readily available blankets.

Consider your destination climate and planned events when you arrive. Do you need bug repellent, sunscreen, gloves, travel sickness tablets, hay fever, sunglasses or anti diarrhoea tablets? Is there personal medication you need on you? In accordance with universal airline restrictions, any prescription medication will need the doctors' script authorisation.

So your checking a bag, thats fine but bring an extra set of clothes and deodorant. Regardless if the flight is 3 hr domestic or 8 hrs international, there is always the same likelihood of luggage being lost. In the meantime, being able to have a clean set of clothes will help freshen you up and last you until you get your bag back or are able to buy/ wash clothes if required. Pack these in a ziplock bag rolled up. You'll be glad you did.

In saying that, there is a chance you'll be in a situation without the necessary items nor at a convenient place. A mini emergency kit is handy to consider having on you. These usually include a mini sewing kit, bandaids, pain relief tablet etc

So you aren't having a checked bag. Space is your enemy here. Use sample sized products for face, hair and body. These may be from a promotional gift. Or ask family and friends if they have any you can use. The last thing you want to do before your holiday is spend more money on it, so convert your favourite products into smaller travel friendly containers. There are specific plastic squeeze tubes, tubs and spray bottles for this that you can purchase.

Remember not to take anything you haven't tried before. Test before you leave. You can react to it worse then imagined and on holiday, in isolation and in photos, there mitt be nothing worse. Also know the liquid, gel and aerosol restrictions.

Now your all set to get exploring!
