The purpose is to get in the tiny crevices on the face, specific spot concealing, highlighting and contouring. This isn't necessary at all. The original sized Beauty Blender performs the exact same function. If you have particular small eyes then I can see how you'll love this. Otherwise this is totally unnecessary.

I feel like there is a decent amount of sponge when stippling onto my face. The Sponge has a patent-pending elliptical shape making for fool proof makeup application with no streaks.
Use the pointed end around the eyes and nose. Use the ball end for the cheekbones. These actions feather out the makeup's edges, leaving a perfect finish.
