All About | Skin Tones

Knowing your skin tone can greatly help you choose colours in clothes and makeup that compliment you so much better.

The colour wheel is literally all you need to figure out about tones. Identify the colour that's the basis of the area you're targeting. Move your eye directly across the wheel and this colour is the one you need to neutralise your target area.

Redness areas including blemishes would sit in the red section of the wheel. This is a warm colour so to neutralise it we need a cool colour. The opposite side of the wheel is complementary green. Now while this isn't natural colouring for your face, the closest primary colour is yellow. You then want a yellow undertoned concealer to correct redness.

Undereye area is either blue or purple based. These are cool colours so to neutralise it we need a warm colour. Using the colour wheel we can see that the opposite colour is complementary orange and yellow. You want to a salmon (pink)/ peachy (orange) undertones. Those with a warm skin undertone and purple under eye will benefit from a more peachy concealer. Those with cool skin undertone and more blue under eye will benefit from a more salmon concealer.

Make sense? The more you look and the different undertones in makeup the do become more easily identified. For skin tones there are a general 3, each has it's own characteristics. The undertone that you have is the one that you fit more into. It's okay if you one characteristic of another tone.

Cool Toned
You have blue veins, pinker looking skin and found yourself to look better in silver jewellery. Generally you either have blue, grey, green eyes with blonde, brown or black hair with ashy or cool undertones. Looking at the colour wheel a warm colour is needed, pink (to the left of red) has an opposite colour of yellow which will correct. It's best to look for yellow undertoned foundations and powers.

Warm Toned
You have greener veins, yellow looking skin and found yourself to look better in gold jewellery. Generally you either have brown, hazel, amber eyes with strawberry blonde, red or brown hair with ashy or warm undertones. Looking at the colour wheel a cool colour is needed, yellow has an opposite colour of pink which will correct. It's best to look for pink undertoned foundations and powers.

Netural Toned
You have a mix of green and blue veins, brown/greener looking skin and found yourself to look better in silver jewellery. The best part about is that you can wear either yellow or pink undertoned foundations and powders. Most companies offer a neutral shade choice with equal parts of the two tones.
