How To: Order Products Online (& Love Them!)

Now I'm not claiming to know it all, but I feel like I have had my fair share of makeup buying online. Especially living in Australia where items are either not available or double the US price. So there is a few tips that I've picked up that I wanted to share.

Know You
Firstly, know yourself. Know your skin type ie. oily, dry etc and your skin undertone ie. cool or warm. This helps so much when deciding on the right shade of foundation or powder. The wrong shade can look completely off. You know the darker orange or light ashy face look. Not at all flattering.

Also know what you want in a product. If you want a mascara that adds volume, the new most talked about mascara that adds length won't really impress you. For me with my combination skin, mousse foundations just do not work. They slip off my t-zone and make my skin look oily and greasy. So I want a foundation with a matte or natural finish, nothing dewy or glowy.

Colour Choice
Think about what type of product you're buying. Choosing a slightly wrong tone means it'll look even more off on your face. I think the hardest products to choose right are the correct foundation shade. Choose a shade the same as your undertone. So cool undertones suit more yellow based foundations and warm undertones suit pink/ peach based foundations.

Under eye and blemish's shades have different methods. To correct these you need to choice the opposite tone. Blemish's (red-warm) needs a yellow (cool). Under eye area (blue-cool) needs a peach (warm).

Don't get me wrong, learning this is tricky to begin with a a learning curve. One way to more correctly decide is match the colour to that of a current one. Drugstore brands can easily be swatched next to each other to closely match your current foundation. Remember when choosing a final shade always swatch hit on your jawline to blend the face to the neck.

If your buying a high end brand such as MAC or NARS from a US site that's cheaper, go into your local store and ask for a sample of a shade you think is yours or your tossing up between. That way you can determine what will work for you.

If all you have is one drugstore foundation such as Revlon and are choosing a high end the best tip I can give is using the shade swatches online on the relevant websites. Understand that the digital colour is slightly different to a physical swatch.

Research
Use Youtube and blogs to find reviews on the product. Listen to skin type of the person reviewing as different types will like a foundation differently. Pay particular attention to those with the same skin type as you for a more accurate review.

Learn the positive and negatives of the foundation against the skin type, how best to apply it, the longevity etc. Be fully aware of what the product. Know what you're buying and what to expect so you aren't disappointed that it isn't a volumious mascara when all the reviews said it did a great job at lengthening. This is a good place to find comparable products.
