Jet Lag | Travel Tips

Welcome to my Travel Tip Series. I wanted to create a series of tips and ideas that'll suit anyone, any time of the year, on any budget, for any length of time away on holiday.

Holidays with international travelling especially across timezones will encounter this. Jet lag is a temporary internal body clock disruption and generally takes 3-4 days to overcome. Now I've never experienced this but I will in June in my first solo holiday where the the difference is 13 hours behind home time. From what I've heard jet lag is killer and ruins the first few days of the trip. So I want to avoid this effect as much as possible and took a visit to my local doctor for help where I was able to pick up some pamphlets too.

Symptoms of jet lag include; fatigue, insomnia (not able to get to sleep or enough sleep), dehydration, anxiety, headache, dizziness (from dehydration), nausea, irritability, bowel problems (diarrhoea or constipation), sweating and possibly memory loss.

While nothing will cure or 100% avoid jet lag, there are ways to prevent the degree of jet lag to being high and to cope when at your final destination. My doctor said it's easier to cope travelling east to west. Having said that he recommend two big tips; change your schedule to suit your destination time and to keep hydrated. If you arrive at night then have dinner, follow your night time routine and go to sleep as early as possible. If you arrive in the morning try and maintain your normal routine such as having a shower, breakfast/ lunch getting out of your hotel and going for a walk, sucking in some fresh air and sunlight. If you are tired during the first day it is fine to nap but no more then 3 hours.

The pamphlet he gave me also included these follow ways to cope with jet lag;
  • avoid alcohol & caffeine before and during your flight
  • move around the plane every few hours to keep circulation up
  • stay in shape and be as healthy as possible. Apparently a healthier body isn't likely to feel the effects as much
  • get medical advice if you have a condition you're worried about while flying
  • wear comfortable clothes
  • break up the flying time by having a stop over for a day
  • adapt to local schedule before you leave by waking up earlier and sleeping later
  • eat light, small meals
  • get sunlight as soon as possible
  • use sleep medication wisely or not at all
I hope this was of some help to you as it was to me. All of these I do at home but I'll defiantly have to make a conscious effort to drink more water and he hardest will be staying awake when I'm exhausted!! I'll be sure to let you know how my efforts went.
